Office 365 Connect

November 13-15, 2018

I have been lucky in my speaking career to be invited to a few wonderful events. To that end, when NC Communications asked me to submit session proposals to their Office 365 Connect event in Haarlem, Netherlands, I was beyond thrilled that they selected two of my sessions for this year's Office 365 Connect.

Migrating SharePoint from On-Prem to Office 365 – Lessons Learned by Microsoft IT covers how Microsoft moved many of its internal SharePoint sites from our on-prem farms onto Office 365. In the beginning, we will cover migration options and how they impact sites and users. Along the way, you can learn the possible migration paths and the capabilities of the Office 365 compared to your current environment. We will focus to the technical how-to of performing migrations to Office 365. Lastly, I will highlight the "gotchas" and guide you through some of the best practices used by Microsoft IT. While I present this session at many different venues, there will be some additional tips and tricks specific for this event. Make sure to come attend on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at 14:00 in Room B.

Running SharePoint on Azure - Tips and Tricks is a quick session on the best ways to run SharePoint on Azure services. We will look at IaaS from a viewpoint of Compute, Networking and Storage to make the best of Azure hosting. We will also look at other services in Azure that you can utilized for hosting SharePoint on the Public Cloud. Please join me on Thursday, November 15, 2018 at 13:30 in Room E.

On top of my two sessions, I plan to be around the conference center for much of my time over the days. If you would like to setup a quick chat, feel free to contact me about getting together.

LinkedIn SREInCon 2018

I want to thank all of the attendees that came to my session. As this was an internal conference, I cannot provide any details about my session nor any of the resources.

While attending Microsoft's first SRECon earlier this year, I found out that our LinkedIn SRE sisters and brothers not only have their own but it has been put on several years now. I worked with my boss to get an invitation but wanted to bring something to their conference, so I applied to speak.

First, I want to thank the LinkedIn SREInCon 2018 Committee for letting me not only attend but speak at this year's event. It was a tremendous honor to learn a lot about how LinkedIn runs their services and site, how their SRE's work to improve the site reliability and the integrated roles that the SRE's have with the engineering teams they work with.

Additionaly, I want to thank all of the attendees that came to my session. I had a great time with the topic and it felt well received. The Q&A at the end was amazing as well. As this was an internal conference, I cannot provide any details about my session nor any of the resources.

SharePoint Saturday Vancouver

Thank you to the SPSVan Planning Committee and Board for allowing my to come up and present PowerApps and Flow: "How I Learned to Love No-code Apps". As usual, the attendees were great to speak with and the interest in the topic was wonderful to see.

Another SharePoint Saturday Vancouver is done and I am sad to be leaving the "Great White North". Thank you to the SPSVan Planning Committee and Board for allowing my to come up and present PowerApps and Flow: "How I Learned to Love No-code Apps". As usual, the attendees were great to speak with both during and outside my presentation. The interest in the topic was wonderful to see.

Unfortunately, due to pain from shoulder surgery I had 2 weeks prior to Saturday, I had to leave early which limited my interactions with attendees and speakers. I am looking forward to a return in 2019 to spend more times with attendees.

SharePoint Saturday Utah

As always, SPSUtah is one of my favorite events of the year. The engagement with other speakers and attendees make it an event I look forward to every year. The new Teams session I presented had a good group of attendees and the last minute add of my O365 Migration session was very well received.

As always, SharePoint Saturday Utah is one of my favorite events of the year. The engagement with other speakers and attendees make it an event I look forward to every year. With the new facility, there was a new energy to the day of learning. Originally, I planned to fly in early for the ShareSki on Friday but could not participate. My plans for next year is to participate and enjoy the Utah snow.

Team Up for Success came from a request from the team to cover a topic that no other speaker was covering. Even though I do not claim to be a Microsoft Teams expert, it is a tool that I use extensively at work. This lead me to present a "how-to" and 101 about Microsoft Teams and I thank the attendees for their questions and feedback about this new presentation.

After arriving, the SPS Utah team asked if I could add in one of my standby presentations to help cover for a speaker that got too ill to come out. I was super happy to help out and we added Migrating SharePoint to the Cloud: Lessons Learned by Microsoft IT at the end of the day. The attendees impressed me with a room near its capacity for this presentation.

Level Up Azure for IT Pros ... And SharePoint Too!

p>Hope that everyone had a great Thanksgiving holiday in the US and getting ready for the holiday season around the world. I have been enjoying time with my family in New York including giving my niece and nephew a brand new Xbox One. They have been filling their free time since with many waves of Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare. Even I am getting into it now. I am guessing there will be many multiplayer games on Xbox Live with them. Oh darn!

One of the things I forgot to blog about earlier is one of the best events online for IT Pros. The Azure IaaS for IT Pros Online Event that has been hosted by Rick Claus is giving IT Professionals some great information about Azure and specifically the infrastructure as a service (IaaS) offerings. Azure keeps adding incredible services for Azure users including some recent additions:

  • D-Series VMs with more memory and dedicated Intel CPU Cores
  • G-Series (aka Godzilla-Series) with even more memory and dedicated Intel CPU Cores
  • Premium Storage on SSD for Standard D-Series and G-Series servers that will offer 4,000 IOPs per VHD (Standard storage offers 500 IOPs per VHD).

Getting an opportunity to play with these services has excited me to what Azure can offer IT Professionals. One of the best uses of Azure for IT Pros is making "proof of concept" environments. You can prove how technologies work while not taking any of your current on-prem hardware. Another easy use is running development or QA testing environments. In both of these cases, you can turn on and off the environment while you need it and only be billed for the environment while it is on.

But I have buried the lead here folks. On Thursday, at 12:00 Pacific time, I will be talking about SharePoint on Azure. Yup, that's right … I will be talking about how to run SharePoint on Azure. There are some tweaks and best practices I will be talking about with SharePoint on Azure IaaS. I will also go over the new Cloud App Model (CAM) and how you can use Azure with it. Lastly, there's a few other things Azure can help with around SharePoint. I am including my introduction video here:

I recommend you heading over to http://aka.ms/levelupazure to watch the recorded sessions and to see me live tomorrow. If you can't see me live, you can always catch up on the recordings.
